FUCK YOUR TEAM: COWBOYS EDITION

PART of being a good fan is knowing about more than just “your team”. It also means having a handle on state of your rivals. Who is on their roster, who’s injured and things like that. I mean, it would be silly to STILL be rooting against Marion Barber, right? So you have to keep up with what’s going on. That said, here is the current state of the Dallas Cowboys right now.

Running Back Darren McFadden suffered a dislocated jaw yesterday while saying that he hopes to stay healthy for the 2015 season. It was a non-contact injury since all he was doing at the time was talking. However, several reports say that McFadden was also unwrapping a stick of gum when the injury occurred, and may or may not have also suffered a paper cut which required stitches.

Due to McFadden’s injury, Joseph Randle is hoping for a chance to steal the role of starter and has at least one supporter in teammate Dez Bryant. Bryant, when asked about Randle’s abilities is said to have spoken effusively about the RB, saying “That boy GOOD. He real good! He’s so good he’ll make you smack your mother! Trust me on that.”

Unfortunately today’s early practice for rookies and selected veterans was cut short when rookie Randy Gregory seized up in a full body cramp and just kept screaming and screaming and screaming. Coach Jason Garrett tried to help the rookie by rubbing Gatorade directly onto the top of Gregory’s helmet and then his knees, but both Garrett’s initial approach and his adjustment proved to be misguided and ineffective.

Free Agent acquisition Greg Hardy (apparently married now judging by the picture), declined to comment on how he’s fitting in with the Cowboys culture. He was in a rush because rookie La’el Collins was giving an alibi symposium and Hardy didn’t want to be late.

So there it is. A basic over-view on one of our rivals. If this one gets enough notice I’ll do another one soon, if not I’ll do the next one next season.

CAN EAGLES AFFORD (TO LOSE) JEREMY MACLIN?

UNLESS some other team backs a truckload of money up to his house, our #1 WR is coming back next year. The Eagles simply can’t afford to lose Jeremy Maclin. Despite delusional fans who say we didn’t miss DeSean Jackson in 2014, anybody who actually knows this sport knows that we did, and they also know why we did.

NFL.com flat out said in these exact words “the Eagles can’t expect Riley Cooper to lead the way at wideout”. That’s a fact that even Cooper’s parents would have to agree with. Despite some young talent behind Maclin, NOBODY is under the illusion that the Eagles can afford to lose him. This is why I said in October that we should have been developing Jordan Matthews. You have to ask yourself, how much extra leverage did Maclin gain, simply because Riley Cooper kept starting? Then again the real question is, how hot of a bidding war can we endure to keep him, since we didn’t develop any other starters?

One possible hot suitor for Maclin is Kansas City. Maclin is a Missouri native, and he has a positive history with Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid. In fact, Maclin wrote at length about Reid’s genius. With KC needing a WR as bad as Dez Bryant needed Stickum on Sunday, it makes sense that KC would try to land Maclin.

However considering that KC will be strapped for cash in a year when Maclin is looking to break the bank, the union seems far-fetched. That is, unless the rumblings of mass ejections rumored to happen in KC actually take place. Word is that WR’s Dwayne Bowe, Donnie Avery and a few other heretofore sacred cows, will all be sacrificed on the Altar of Cap Savings, in a ritual known as the Cutting of the Dead Weight.

Even with some of the cuts we’re set to make (Cary Williams), and some of the possible restructures (Trent Cole), when you consider how many players we’ll need to re-sign or replace, the salary cap doesn’t allow for much in the way of overpaying. So a bidding war for Maclin would be bad, though the Chiefs we can probably handle with that. However, if other teams get involved, it could get out of hand as well as out of our price range.

There is one scenario where we keep Maclin, but to our own disadvantage. If a division rival were to initially bid just beyond the Eagles “comfort threshold” for Maclin, our counteroffer would start out on the uncomfortable side. Even without a protracted bidding war, we would already be in a situation where we’d have to part with someone we expected to have back. In that way our rivals could sabotage us just by making Maclin an offer.

I’m guessing that March will be anything but boring.

ME AND BRIAN DAWKINS ARE PISSED

EAGLES future Hall Of Famer Brian Dawkins, took issue with the way Dez Bryant was covered during our 38-27 loss to Dallas this past Sunday. While he did point the finger at the Secondary for not communicating better, he was very upset by the coaching and game plan. He went as far as to say that the EAGLES “gave [Bryant] the opportunity to do what he did, in my opinion, by continuing to single that dude up left and right, by himself, over and over again with no help at no point”. 

Now granted, I’ve been bitching about Defensive Coordinator Bill Davis since the EAGLES first announced that they were even interviewing him. Where most EAGLES fans had no idea who the guy was, I was already familiar with his work and his concepts, (since my best friend is a 49ers fan). I also knew about his failure Arizona. I wrote that every defense he coaches is worse in the second year. It was true in San Fran. It was true in Arizona. It’s now true here in Philadelphia.

His 3-4 concept DOES NOT WORK AGAINST GOOD TEAMS. His underneath coverage is highly susceptible to Crossing routes. TE’s can expect clean releases off the line. And due to all the Single-high Coverage, opposing QB’s generally know where the one-on-one is as soon as the huddle breaks.

While it’s one thing for me to rant about this stuff, it’s quite another to have a guy like Dawkins voice the same concerns. And while yes, he’s only talking about this one game, what we saw out there is characteristic of what we see every week out of our Secondary. What Dawk and I are most incensed about isn’t that a guy will get beat, or that the game plan may have holes; it’s the total lack of being able to make adjustments.

Dawk played for Jim Johnson who was The Master of in-game adjustments. To see Davis be unable to even make basic ones is enough to make your nose bleed from stress. It’s the New Orleans playoff game all over again.

I saw this mistake (hiring Davis) coming before we made it. I’ve been pointing these faults out in detail for two years. But to now have some validation from a player of Dawk’s magnitude…I wonder if anyone else is as pissed as we are.

SUNDAY 8:30 Lincoln Financial Field – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

 

SHOWDOWN

THIS is the biggest game of the regular season. Not because it’s against the Cowboys, but because it’s one of three division games at the end of the season. As long as two teams in this division were still alive in the race to win it, there was ALWAYS going to be a fight somewhere during these last three weeks.

Personally, I’m glad it’s the Cowpies. If we can string this and the va-giants game into wins, we can rest our starters in Week 17. If it were us and the Foreskins, we’d have to run hot the whole time, which might burn us out for the playoffs.

 

EAGLES

Defense

Except for the inability to contain Russell Wilson last week, our Defense was what I expected it to be against the Seahawks offense. Dallas plays with a similar mindset (pound the ball, draw teams into the box, hit’em up top vs 1-on-1 coverage), but Dallas’s QB can’t run around anymore. Somewhere out there DE Vinny Curry and OLB’s Brandon Graham, Trent Cole and Connor Barwin are licking their chops.

Then of course there’s the fact that this Defense took away all of Dallas’s weapons last time we met. It’s not like the Cowboys had anyone out on injury or suspension when we did that. They weren’t playing on a slick field that hampered their running. Conditions will be similar this time around. Except colder. Windier. And the crowd won’t be neutral this time. It’ll be downright unfriendly. Expect the Defense to repeat what it did two weeks ago.

Offense

QB Mark Sanchez cut Dallas’s defense up like a fork-tender steak the last time he saw it. And RB LeSean McCoy ran through their defenders like he was coated in Ex-lax. The excuse from Cowpies fans last time around was that they only had 4 days rest. Translation:

Fuck outta here, you whiny bitches. It was the same 4 days of rest we had, plus WE had to travel.

If you take Dallas now having to travel east to play outside in cold air (making breath harder to recover, trust me, I know), and add it to the fast paced Offense we tired them out with two weeks ago;  it might have these guys on the sidelines wearing oxygen masks like they’re playing in Denver.

Defense

Really? They have one?

Offense

My instincts say that with the colder, windier weather that will make the ball as hard as a brick, Dallas won’t want to throw the ball around too much. Especially if fans are loud enough to make it hard to hear in the huddle. (And just so you know: Run plays usually have short names like “23 Trap” or “31 Dive”; whereas pass plays have names like “Spider 2 Y Banana” or “Spread RT X Left Zoom Post 269”. So the louder fans are, the harder it is for an opponent’s passing game to be in synch.)

Basically this next game will be them attempting to get RB DeMarco Murray on track early. As long as we realize that and focus more on limiting him and don’t over-commit to stopping him altogether, we can throw a wet blanket over their whole offense again.

 

BOTTOM LINE

Dallas plays a style of ball that currently can’t beat us on offense and can’t keep up with us on defense. The only way we lose this game is if we’re careless with the ball and maybe not even then.

LOCKING DOWN THE NFC EAST

POOR Cowboys fans. 33-10 on our way to locking down the NFC East and it wasn’t even close. It was 33-10 in your HOME. 33-10 in front of a national audience. We humiliated you. Bullied you. Beat you.

BROKE YOU. And  it wasn’t even close.

Look at your QB. Look at him.

Giving up on the play to save his life. Feeling the heat. FEARING the hit. His nerve deserting him in front of the world. His back may have been injured, but his spine was missing entirely.

We took that from him.

We took HIM from you. We took Bryant from you. We took Murray from you. We took Witten. My god, we took it all. We just came and TOOK whatever we damned well pleased.

And in 2 weeks, we’re going to do it all over again. 

Prior to the last game some of your fans were saying how they hardly saw this as a rivalry. And I have to agree. Cats don’t consider mice rivals. You’ve become prey. The Cowboys are almost a food source now.

And in 2 weeks someone is going to lock you in our cage. Again, in front of a nation audience. Want to guess at how that will turn out? My prediction is-

First, we have this Seattle situation to handle. But you are on the menu. Don’t doubt that. Never doubt that.

JEREMY MACLIN: THE BEST WR IN THE NFC EAST.

NFL: Dallas Cowboys at Philadelphia Eagles

IS Jeremy Maclin better than Dez Bryant?

For years Maclin took a backseat as the #2 to DeSean Jackson. Now that Jackson has moved on, we’re getting a taste of why Maclin didn’t want to sign a smaller deal this offseason. In a head to head comparison with Bryant, Maclin owns him every single category that they aren’t tied in. Someone in a Facebook group (NFC BEAST) that I’m currently a member of,  posted this question:

It makes you wonder if those who respond will compare Bryant and Maclin’s careers, or if they’ll go by this season. My answer was Maclin. Not because I’m an EAGLES fan but because MACLIN

Right now this is no contest. It’s not even fair. I mean look at this:

And that’s with BOTH men having played 10 games, as both teams are 7-3. Again, Maclin owns Bryant in any category they aren’t tied in.

OWNS him. Like a dog. Or a pair of socks. 

Now that Maclin is no longer the second option, he’s making it known that HE is the best WR in the NFC East. But what do you think? Comment here on the website.
