FOUR THINGS: WK 16: EAGLES – COMMANDERS

TOTAL domination! It was a blowout/shutout, where we allowed just 75 yards all game long, while scoring 31 points. We adjusted to the weather, and instead of throwing it a ton, we ran for 183 yards, controlling the clock for 39 minutes. We responded well to what was happening around us, and stayed in control of what we could control. For example, not playing down to the opponent.

This week’s opponent, the 4 – 10 Commanders, didn’t build enough foundation in the off-season. Now injury, age, and a lack of depth, have them already eliminated from playoff contention. Usually teams like that want to play spoiler. However, with nine other teams with records of 4 – 10 or worse, the Commanders coaching staff may tank to keep or improve their top ten spot in the upcoming Draft.

A win moves us to 10 – 5, clinching both the 2025 NFC East title and a playoff berth.

A loss holds us to 9 – 6. While we would still be in the lead to win the division, we would make things much more complicated for ourselves.

The point of Four Things isn’t to predict a winner, it’s to discuss which tactics would give our Eagles the best chance to win this game. Often I list fundamentals, as some of the four things. BUT NO MORE! Unless something specific is needed, fundamentals like Running the ball; playing lots of Man Press; and Tackling instead of going for the strip, will be automatically included. (Like the five consonants and a vowel that Wheel Of Fortune automatically spots you.) So here are the Four Things that we need to focus on this week versus: the COMMANDERS.

1) Exploit Age On the Perimeter: Between the Commanders starting DE’s and OLB’s, the respective ages are 33, 30, 29 and 36. Let’s get a couple of toss/pitch runs to RB Saquon Barkley, and maybe a Jet Sweep to WR Jahan Dotson. Let’s challenge any steps those defenders may have lost to age, as well as stress their joints with change of direction.

That’s not to say that we shouldn’t test the middle. We need to. Especially between C Cam Jurgens and RG Tyler Steen. We haven’t had much success running there this season. If opponents see us avoid trying to, it makes us easier to scheme against. There are no yardage goals here, but let’s get for at least four runs in that hole, to assess later.

2) Exploit the Loaded Box: The leading pass rusher for the Commanders is OLB Von Miller with 7 sacks. They like to play him on over the RT. He has no real coverage responsibilities and doesn’t make plays in that phase of the game. Quick completions outside to TE Dallas Goedert should be easy.

In the event that the Commanders rock and roll their Safeties, that should put their one player in Single-high coverage and leave their RCB in one-on-one. If we see that early, we need to test that early. Otherwise, lean on the run, throw to Goedert when he’s open, and let the clock keep ticking.

3) Stay Fresh Up Front: You may not know it, but the #4 rushing attack in the league belongs to the Commanders. They don’t have one scary player, instead it’s a group effort. Mobile QB, fresh RB’s cycling in and out. (None of whom are great receivers.)

We need to counter that with staying fresh up front. Keep a close eye and when they sub, we sub. Their RB’s aren’t more talented than our defenders. So it makes no sense to allow them clutch plays, just because we got tired. Rotate our stock out there.

4) Force Longer Passes: If we play Cover Two and take away most of the quick underneath stuff, early in the game, it will also aid us in limiting yards off of QB scrambles. This places a lot of emphasis on making tackles at the catch point.

It also invites the possibility of the Commanders hitting on big plays, in front of their home crowd. So it comes with a little risk. That said, QB Marcus Mariota isn’t exactly known for accuracy, and even if their LT plays, his oblique injury will keep him from being anywhere close to 100%.

If the Eagles do these Four Things, then we’ll be virtually impossible to beat. That being said…

Players play for pride, and many Commanders players are at this point, auditioning for jobs next year. So winning matters to them. Commanders coaches on the other hand, may be itching to move as far up as possible in next years Draft, to start being able to build around QB Jayden Daniels.

While I don’t expect the Commanders to just roll over for us, we may not get their best effort, top to bottom. I don’t care. I just want to clinch this playoff berth. We’d do them a favor by winning, and they’d do us a favor by losing. So, let’s go pick up this “W”, and start officially working on our bid to get RT Lane Johnson and DE Brandon Graham, their third Super Bowl wins.

I hear you asking, “What about all the stuff that stats don’t reveal?” Well, that’s the reason for these Four Things articles. It’s to point out what we need to address BEFORE the game. Then AFTER the game, there’s a no-bullshit assessment of whether or not the Eagles did any of what they needed to do, to ensure the win.

So how much of what I mentioned in Four Things: RAIDERS did the Eagles actually get around to doing? Well let’s see:

1) Try to Pick It: The call was to kill QB Kenny Pickett (15/25 – 60.0% – 64 – 0 – 1). To set the dogs on him. Well, we hit him 9 times with 4 of those being sacks, and two of those belonging to Brandon Graham. We got an interception off of Pickett, and OLB Jalean Phillips (no stats) also hit his arm on one throw, and deflected a pass at the line. We put the heat on my man. (DONE)

2) Win On Third Down: The Raiders came out aggressive and went for it on their very first fourth down. They didn’t convert and didn’t try that shit again. They ended the day converting just 3 of 12 third downs, meaning that we stopped them from converting, 75% of the time. Seems like a win to me! (DONE)

3) Fewer Comeback Routes: The Eagles ran just 19 passing plays on the day, and only 16 before the starters were pulled. Many of the routes involved clearing space for Dallas Goedert, instead of bringing routes back into his area. Nailed it! (DONE)

4) Second Half Run Game: The call was for 12 carries in the second half. We had 17. Ten of those were by RB Tank Bigsby (17 – 57 – 3.3 – 0 – 0), after the starters were pulled. However, 7 of those did go to Barkley, including some grind out yardage right up the middle. (DONE)

This week’s Four Things score was 4 of 4. Same as last week. However, without 160 turnovers, a 4 of 4 score results in the blowout that it should be. We have sort of a short week coming up, then a 2 – 3 hour drive down 95, to go visit the Washington Commanders. (I still find myself almost typing Redskins.) A win down there, and the NFC East belongs to us, for the second year in a row.

Game Hero: Offensive Co-ordinator Kevin Patullo – It was 31 degrees outside. Instead of trying to throw the ball all over the field, Patullo called 39 hand-offs to just 18 pass attempts (and 1 sack). Like someone got him some common sense as an early Christmas present. There were also 8 QB runs, some of which were designed, some of which were scrambles. I’m not interested in picking gnat shit out of pepper, so I’ll call it 39 to 19.

Game goat: Reality – Sometimes reality fucking blows. In this game, QB Tanner McKee (3/3 – 100% – 33 – 0 – 0) continued to put out great tape, and he might have been auditioning for a starting spot in Vegas next year.

Each time he gets meaningful reps, he looks like the real deal. Even yesterday running our back-ups against the Raiders starters, you couldn’t help but notice his presence. His rookie contract ends next season, and he’s made it no secret that he wants to play. We won’t be replacing Hurts with McKee, so there’s no way McKee re-signs here.

If we’re smart, we package him with something to move up in the Draft. (Maybe even with Vegas.) Kenny Pickett will be a free agent, but he’s looking at a back-up role. Seeing how much love the Eagles players showed him after the game, and his 86 rating as an Eagles back-up, he might be a solid locker room re-addition.

On The Whole:

One of the best parts of this shutout, was how we kept the clock running, running, running. It kept the Raiders coaching staff unable to plot a comeback, because we’d weaponized time itself. As a result, the game was over nearly an hour before the one that followed it.

The best part however, might have escaped all but the most cagey of observers.

In the playoffs, the expression is to pack your defense and your run game. Yesterday’s game was a clinic of defense and running the ball. It was a master class in clock management. We held the ball for 39 minute to their 20. We kept them from an opportunity to be dangerous. The Eagles are getting into a playoffs mindset already.

FOUR THINGS: WK 3: EAGLES – RAMS

WE cemented our place above the Chiefs, in their house, no less! Our Defense stepped up big-time, with rookie S Andrew Mukuba stealing what could have been the go-ahead score for them.

Despite our Offense being one-sided, we were able to lean on our run game. Instead of a bunch of flashy long runs, we took a ground and pound approach. This week we should be able to pull that off again, behind an Offensive Line that averages 329 per man, vs a Rams front five that averages 281.

A win moves us to 3 – 0, and keeps us in sole position at the top of the division.

A loss, would see us held to 2 – 1, and expose us to the possibility of falling to second in the division.

1) Pound the Rock: Again, we have a significant size advantage up front. In both games last year when we faced them, we were sporting an average size of 338 pounds per man, and were throwing dudes out of the club with the regularity of a sunrise. Just for clarity, 24 hours per day, a sunrise is always happening somewhere in the world. The result was TWO 200 yard rushing games from RB Saquon Barkley.

We’ve slimmed down by an average of 9 pounds per man, but it still should result in a relentlessly vulgar display of power. There’s a really good chance we’ll be looking at 8 and 9 and 15 man boxes, in order to stop our run game. If that happens, there had better be some audibles to get the ball quickly into WR A.J. Brown’s hands.

2) Make Their QB Run: Their QB is 37, and he has a bad back. He’s also never been much of a runner. To put numbers to that, last year he ran 30 times for 41 yards. On the other hand, if we let him stand in the pocket and throw the ball, he will perform surgery on our Defense, and remove it’s heart. This would be a great week to get a blindside sack (or four) from DE Jalyx Hunt.

3) Involve Goedert Early: The Rams OLB’s are pass rushers. They won’t spend much time trying to cover TE Dallas Goedert. That means either an ILB comes from the inside and makes running the ball easier; or a S has to come down, putting the Rams in Single-high coverage. That will give one or both of our WR’s one-on-one match-ups.

The earlier Goedert gets passes completed to him, the sooner this effect begins to take place. It also doesn’t hurt that he’s a very good run blocker. Either passing should be easy or running should. Best of all, it’ll be really easy to read which one the Rams are surrendering.

4) Let’s Safety Dance: Make sure that CB Adoree Jackson has help back deep. Honestly, I don’t trust him vs either of the Rams top two options. If the catch gets made, we at least need to be able to make the tackle.

If the Eagles do these Four Things, then we’ll be virtually impossible to beat. That being said…

This is a battle of two unbeaten teams, that met in the playoffs. When that game is discussed, what keeps coming up isn’t the Rams loss. Instead, what gets brought up is that they mighta/coulda/shoulda/maybe had a shot at beating the Eagles in that game. An Eagles win here, makes that discussion not worth having anymore.

FOUR THINGS: WK 1: EAGLES – COWBOYS

SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONS! We’re starting the season at home, vs the Cowboys, and we’re hanging our Super Bowl banner with them on the field! After which, we’re going to tie another beating to their asses, and send them back home, with a shiny new “L”.

The Cowboys were 29th in the league at stopping the run last year. Want to guess which team was the only one that had a RB run for 2,000 yards last year? It was the Eagles! We had RB Saquon Barkley gouging teams for chunk plays, on a near weekly basis. Which is likely the approach we’re going to attempt this week.

At least at first.

A win over a division rival in the first week, would give our Eagles a two game gap over the Cowboys. Unfortunately, because the giants and Commanders are playing each other, the winner of that game enjoys the same sort of divisional leg up.

A loss, that would put our team, two games back. So let’s avoid that.

WR DeVonta Smith goes for 6!

1) Don’t Get Bullied: This season, every defense we face, at the top of their To-Do List, will be stopping Saquon. This is especially true of the Cowboys, after their owner traded away their best pass rushing LB, for a run defending DT. They will come in with a point to make, and we cannot let them get away with attempting to make it.

During the Super Bowl, the Chiefs threw everything they had at stopping Saquon, and while they did hold him to just 57 yards on 25 carries (2.2ypc), they committed so much to it, that Super Bowl MVP QB Jalen Hurts was out there essentially playing catch with WR’s A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. If the Cowboys want to follow that plan, we should exploit it.

2) Play the Hits: Their 32 year-old QB is coming back from a leg injury, which cost him the last nine games of the year. So let’s knock him down, early. Make him pick himself up off the ground a few times. Get Father Time whispering in his ear.

Ultimately the idea is to force the Cowboys coaching staff to go with more max protect, and limit how many receivers our guys have to cover.

(Unless it’s their plan to let him get beat up, so they can get their back-up out there… But I’m not one to gossip!)

3) Settle the Hash: All the talk is about the Cowboys trying to improve vs the run, while proving that they can still rush the passer. That points to an over-commitment to their front seven, and exploitable holes in their secondary. (See: Jalen Hurts in Super Bowl 59.)

Get the ball to TE Dallas Goedert and WR Jahan Dotson. Set a goal of 10 targets and 7 catches. The yards don’t matter, it’s the higher number of targets that are important. The idea is to force the Cowboys to cover, to loosen the box, and facilitate our run game. To do that, we have to be better this year at involving the TE and Slot WR.

4) Take Their Heart Away: When the Eagles go to our five man defensive line, DT Jordan Davis has to move the line of scrimmage backward, as often as possible. That means driving the C (the heart of their blocking schemes), back into the running lanes, and warping the pocket, so that the QB can’t step up into his passes.

Taking away the C also means that he can’t help the G’s, which would allow DT Jalen Carter a few opportunities to play without being double-teamed.

The traps here, are potential overconfidence, and underestimation of the opponent. Our players have to show up. Not just their names or reputations. We have to run, hustle, hit, and communicate at maximum effort. One down at a time. It sounds corny, but it’s how teams are built. It’s how games are won. It’s how trophies are hoisted.

MY 2025 DRAFT WISHLIST

WINNING the Super Bowl with what people have repeated called “the best roster in the NFL” and/or “the deepest roster in the NFL”, says that when the final game of the season was over, your Philadelphia Eagles, had few if any, holes to fill.

Then came free agency, with opposing teams driving truckloads of money up to some of our players. Like back-up DT Milton Williams, netting a four year 104M$ deal from the Patriots. Then after free agency, trades like the one that sent FS C.J. Gardner-Johnson to the Texans. Then releases, like CB Darius Slay being allowed to take I-76 over to Pittsburgh.

Personnel losses (especially on Defense), left us with questions about depth. We also face possible starting holes, if our announced heir-apparent players, aren’t able to step up. Players like DT Moro Ojomo, FS Sydney Brown, and CB Kelee Ringo.

This is where the annual NFL Draft comes in. In a few days, General Manager Howie Roseman gets to load up on young, cheap talent, to help patch some of the holes. Our ammunition? We enter this year’s draft with eight picks in the first five rounds.

Word is that our biggest need is at Safety. WRONG! That’s not a factual statement. At DE we currently have Bryce Huff (whom we want to trade) and K.J. Henry, on his fourth team in four years. So we have no starting DE’s. This is a massive hole. Luckily this draft is loaded with defensive line talent, so we’d be idiots not to load up on two or three of them.

Time to look at this draft!

Round 1 #32: (Trade up to 15) RDE Shemar Stewart (6’5, 267) – Everyone is talking about us replacing back-up DT Milton Williams. How about we replace starting DE Josh Sweat first? Make sense? I thought so too. Stewart gives us a more sudden, more violent version of Sweat. If he can add his hands to his explosiveness, he’ll require frequent double teaming.

ALTERNATE CHOICE: (Trade up to 15) DT Walter Nolen (6’4, 296) If Stewart is gone, and Nolen is still there, he’s too good to pass up. Better yet, he’s too good to have to face twice a year. He has the tweener body type to move to LDE, with DT Jalen Carter eating double teams beside him.

Round 2 #64: (Trade up to 40, possibly for TE Dallas Goedert and a pick) DE Nic Scourton (6’3, 257) – What I like most about Scourton, is his size. He looks bigger than he’s listed, and he’s played as heavy as 285. I have long thought that we could use bigger DE. By “bigger” I mean 270-plus. Brandon Graham was effective at 6’2 265, but he was never overpowering in the sense of a Reggie White (6’5/305) or a Clyde Simmons (6’6/292). Scourton could give us that size.

This is 6’2 265 pound Brandon Graham, with prospect Nick Scouton. Does Scouton look 6’3 257 pounds to you?

Thing is, he’s projected as a late 1st early 2nd round pick, so he won’t be there at 64. We’ll have to move up to get him as well, but if we could pull it off, our defensive line would be the stuff of nightmares. ALTERNATE CHOICE: (Don’t trade up) LDE Sai’vion Jones – (6’5 280) He has a 3rd round grade on him, so picking him 64th is only slightly over-drafting him. However, if he gets lined up at LDE next to Jalen Carter, by November you won’t care about the pick, because you’ll love the fit.

Round 3 #96: Likely gone in a trade up along with some 2026 Draft capital

Round 4 #134: RB Cam Skattebo (5’9, 219) – Seems weird to you doesn’t it? True or False. RB Saquon Barkley comes with an injury history, and is coming off a 378 touch season? His current back-up, A.J. Dillon, is hopefully recovered from a neck injury. (A stinger. Remember FB Kevin Turner?) Behind Dillon is Will Shipley, who had a nice couple of runs in the playoffs, but looked sluggish all last regular season. So we need some insurance.

Skattebo is a no nonsense sparkplug. He runs hard, bounces off contact, and can also catch the ball. While he lacks the speed to score from anywhere, he has more than enough speed and power, to break of yardage in large chunks.

Round 5 #161: OT Caleb Etienne (6’6, 329) – He has a 6th – 7th round grade on him, but I don’t trust that. He has every tool in the box, he just needs some refinement. I’d love to see Offensive Line Coach Jeff Stoutland get a couple years to develop him, before RT Lane Johnson retires.

Round 5 #164: TE Jackson Hawes (6’4, 253) – He’s an actual TE. He’s not a heavy WR. He’s not a piece that coaches “will be excited to move around”. He’s a TE. He plays at the end of the O-Line. He blocks his ass off. He catches dump-offs, and short passes. Period. He’s not out there to threaten anyone deep. In fact, with 51 catches in 4 years, he rarely saw the ball.

Round 5 #165: CB Marcus Harris (5’11, 189) – More of a zone corner than man, but he’s aggressive towards the ball, and shoots his gun versus the run.

Round 5 #168: Likely gone in a trade up along with some 2026 Draft capital

Notice how I did not select a Safety? That was quite on purpose. If Sydney Brown is getting a shot at the job, then give him the shot. Drafting a rookie early, to stare over Brown’s shoulder, sends a message of no confidence. If there are going to be questions over the starting spot, then just sign a veteran as insurance. Preferably one with knowledge of our defensive system. HINT!

RB Saquon Barkley Snow Bowl 2.0

1) Pound the Rock: We had 34 rushes for 285 yards (8.3ypc), and THREE touchdown runs of 40 yards or longer, vs just 20 pass attempts. We absolutely pounded the fuck out of the rock. (DONE)

THROWBACK MOMENT: Eagles all-time leading rusher RB Lesean McCoy, in Snow Bowl the First

2) Force Their QB to Run: We got QB Matt Stafford (26/44 – 59.0% – 324 – 2 – 0) moving around from the opening drive. The crucial play came on the ninth play of their first possession. Stafford ran up the middle for 5 yards and hurt his ribs. At that point in the game, the grass was fully green, with the sun’s UV rays still contributing to subtle evaporation, and lifting the air somewhat.

Then the snow moved in and it got dark. Funny thing about Philadelphia with the stadium so close to water. When the sun goes down, the air doesn’t lift, and it feels thinner to breathe with exertion. Thin, cold air and hurt ribs, and a slippery ground are not a winning combination.

That combination showed up later in the game, made evident by Stafford’s uncharacteristically spotty ball placement, and decreased velocity on intermediate and deep throws. In the fourth quarter alone, he was 1/5 on passes downfield, and had 5 passes broken up. (DONE)

3) Dallas Goedert Is the Key: Not only was Goedert our leading receiver, but on every one of of our scoring drives from the first to the third quarter, Goedert had a catch. On drives where he didn’t touch the ball, we didn’t score. Simple at that. Until of course, that one play 78 yard dagger in the heart administered by Oh Say Can You Quon.

Oh, I said five targets. Well he had four catches, but one in the third quarter, was wiped out by a penalty on RG Mekhi Becton, who otherwise thugged out in this game. (DONE)

4) Don’t Overthink It: We didn’t. We stayed in our wheelhouse, of running the ball and playing defense. We didn’t dial up trick plays, or go overboard with Screens. We just put on our boots, tossed the Rams into a vat, and commenced to stomping. (DONE)

This week’s Four Things score was 4 of 4. As I always say, if we nail all four, we can’t lose! We opened with a score. They answered, then we retook the lead, and never relinquished it.

Can we do it again? We likely don’t need to, as this Sunday, we get to play a rubber match with the Washington Commanders. This weekend, Philadelphia will host the NFC Championship Game, on our continued quest to win this year’s Super Bowl.

Game Hero: RB Saquon Barkley – If it wasn’t for that 70 yard touchdown drive that we gave up in the fourth quarter, making it 22 – 28, I would give this spot to DT Jalen Carter (5 – 2.0 – 0 – 0) for the way he almost singlehandedly sealed the win for us.

Instead, I have to go with the guy who built the lead, and broke the Rams will to fight back.

Game goat: QB Jalen Hurts – I know some fans are tired of him facing criticism, because whatever he’s doing, it results in wins. For some of us, watching him hold the ball for thirty minutes per play, is beyond frustrating. Just throw the ball away! That beats a sack, every time. If guys aren’t getting open, talk to the Offensive Coordinator. Establish some hot reads. Get the ball in the hands of a teammate.

On The Whole: We started strong and we finished strong. But to be honest, it felt like the Rams had an easier time passing than we did, once the snow hit. That’s not a complaint. Just an observation.

FOUR THINGS: DIVISIONAL ROUND: EAGLES – RAMS

OUR Eagles were dominant last week, despite it offensively being far from our best showing. We held the #8 team in scoring, to just 10 points. That doesn’t bode well for this week’s opponent who ranked 20th in scoring this season. Perhaps our #2 ranked Defense can grab another 4 takeaways this week. I know CB Darius Slay and LB Zack Baun will be doing everything they can, to make that goal a reality.

A win this week and we move on to the Conference Championship. There’s even an outside chance that we could host that game.

A loss would mean the end of our season.

The point of Four Things isn’t to predict a winner, it’s to discuss which tactics would give our Eagles the best chance to win this game. Often I list fundamentals, as some of the four things. BUT NO MORE! Unless something specific is needed, fundamentals like Running the ball; playing lots of Man Press; and Tackling instead of going for the strip, will be automatically included. (Like the five consonants and a vowel that Wheel Of Fortune automatically spots you.) So here are the Four Things that we need to focus on this week versus: the Rams.

1) Pound the Rock: The Eagles Offensive Line is better than the Rams front seven. That has been proven twice in the last two years; both times in the dome that the Rams call home. This time the game is here, in Philadelphia. Oh, and it’s supposed to snow throughout the game.

The last time we saw this team (eight weeks ago), we hung 314 rushing yards on them, with RB Saquon Barkley accounting for 255 of those. He averaged 9.8 yards per carry and absolutely ruined their shit with touchdown runs of 70, and then 72 yards. So expect them to load the box, to prevent a repeat performance. We need to run it, in order to keep the box loaded, and open up big play opportunities downfield.

2) Force Their QB to Run: The Rams QB was born in Tampa FL, played high school ball in Texas, went to Georgia for college, was drafted by a Lions team that plays in a dome, and then he was traded to this Rams team. Which also plays in dome. Did I mention that tomorrow here in Philly it’s going to snow? Heavily.

We need to chase him and make him run around a little. Don’t worry, we’re not talking about a dangerous runner here. This season he ran the ball 30 times for 41 yards. His longest run being 9 yards. Let’s repeatedly alter his a launch points, on a slippery surface.

We want him to not trust his passes, because he’s unsure of the ground, his footing, his visibility, just everything. Take away any semblance of him being able to physically get into a rhythm. And hit him literally any time we can.

3) Dallas Goedert Is the Key: Somewhere between trying to not give up another 300 yards rushing, and covering WR’s A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, there exists TE Dallas Goedert. Opponents having to account for him, means that even a loaded box can be stretched laterally.

We don’t need a lot of Goedert statistically. What we do need, is for at least 5 targets to go his way. The earlier that starts to happen, the easier our Offense will have it. The Rams OLB’s are basically DE’s. They can’t cover. That means either an ILB has to open a gap to cover Goedert, or a S has to rotate down. Which leaves Brown or Smith with one-on-one.

4) Don’t Overthink It: Don’t get cute or start second guessing what we do. If adjustments are needed, make them, but there is no need to do anything radical to stop the Rams. Stick to our scheme.

If the Eagles do these Four Things, then we’ll be virtually impossible to beat. That being said…

Eight weeks ago, we beat this team in their house, 37 to 20. That was a double digit win, without WR DeVonta Smith. We can’t come out flat, or expecting the weather to do us a favor. We need to use the weather as an obstacle during the game. Everything about this match-up, favors to the Eagles. Our guys simply have to go out and claim what belongs to them.

I hear you asking, “What about all the stuff that stats don’t reveal?” Well, that’s the reason for these Four Things articles. It’s to point out what we need to address BEFORE the game. Then AFTER the game, there’s a no-bullshit assessment of whether or not the Eagles did any of what they needed to do, to ensure the win.

So how much of what I mentioned in Four Things: RAVENS did the Eagles actually get around to doing? Well let’s see:

1) Control the Tackle Box: As prescribed, our Defensive Line didn’t get blown off the line of scrimmage. In fact, it as it was DT Jordan Davis (2 tackles) that spent most of the game getting double-teamed, DT Jalen Carter practically lived in the Ravens backfield with 3 of his 4 tackles being for a loss, including him blowing up a Jet Sweep on his own.

We also did a solid job of setting the edges and bottling the runs inside. Maybe a little too good, as we ended up being gashed for a couple of RB Screens. But the adjustment was made on that, to the tune of rookie NCB Cooper DeJean de-cleating the Ravens 250 pound, starting RB. (DONE)

2) Unleash Goedert: We came out and punted FOUR TIMES, before Jalen Hurts attempted a pass to TE Dallas Goedert (4 – 3 – 35 – 11.6 – 1). It was good for a 17 yard touchdown and the Offense opened up from there. That pass didn’t happen until Goedert collided with the Ravens star S, who then had to be checked for a concussion.

It shouldn’t have to take nearly K.O.ing a guy, to get the QB to look Goedert’s way.

However, once that did, the complexion of the game slanted. The best example happened on RB Saquon Barkley’s 25 yard touchdown run: Goedert was lined up on the left side of LT Jordan Mialata. The ball was snapped. The hand-off went to Barkley who stepped right, going behind RG Mekhi Becton and disappearing into the swirling mass of Humanity. Ravens LB #23 Trenton Simpson (4 tackles) who was lined up in the box, doesn’t flow to his left to follow Barkley. Instead, he steps down and to his right, in the direction of a blocking Goedert. This ensures no back-side pursuit, and 25 yards later it’s Saquon and taxes. .

Once Goedert was established as a threat, the Ravens had to deal with him. Which made life easier for the entire Offense. We took our time getting around to it, but we got it (DONE)

3) Keep Our Linebackers Clean: Brother, the Ravens offensive line had more than they could handle up front with our Defensive Line. This let LB Nakobe Dean (10 – 0.0 – 0 – 0) and LB Zack Baun (13 – 1.0 – 0 – 1) bring two arms to their tackles, and not get dragged around by a RB bigger than either of them.

We used some 5 – 2 alignments early, but shifted out of it later in the game, as our four man line proved able enough at clogging running lanes and keeping the opposing RBs trapped behind thetrash. (DONE)

4) Take Deep Shots Early: We took one early to WR A.J. Brown, and then backed away from any hint of a downfield passing attack. Part of it felt like the Eagles couldn’t force the issue with WR DeVonta Smith being out; but part of it feels like trying to preserve Brown, in a game that featured just 21 dropbacks compared to 24 hand-offs. There were also 9 QB runs, but those runs have to be thought of as a third category. (NOT DONE)

This week’s Four Things score was 3 of 4. We got off to a slow start with the Offensive stuff, but on Defense we were killing it from the door. Next week we host a Carolina team, that recently has forgotten that they are doormats. It’s time someone reminded them.

Game Hero: The Defense – Our Offense couldn’t muster a single point in two of the four quarters in this game. We opened up with four straight punts and our QB started 0/4 passing. The last 7 of the Ravens 19 points were garbage time cosmetics, in a half of football, that saw them essentially shutout when the game was still in question. Keep in mind this was done without the Defense garnering a single turnover. S Tristin McCollum almost had one, on a 4th down pass break-up.

Game goat: The Officiating – I am amazed at how the most penalized team in the league, played us so cleanly! And I would have liked to see a replay of the Ravens QB’s 39 yard run, which somehow resulted in a flag being picked up. Dear NFL, why no replay after a 39 yard run??? Is this a new policy?

On The Whole:

This game was a measuring stick, to assess whether or not the 2024 Eagles, are really a deep playoff caliber team. We answered that with a resounding FUCK YEAH!!

We out-ran, out-tackled, out-toughed, and flat out-played the Ravens in their OWN HOME. Save for a garbage time run, that should have been brought back by penalty, we shut this team out of an entire half of the game. The second half. You know, the important one.

And don’t ask me about the Barkley/Henry MVP match-up. I think we tucked that baby neatly into a crib, and shot him into space. Man, we even had two kicks downed inside the five, by two different players. So even Special Teams was crackling with energy.

The slow offensive starts have to be resolved, but I’m not sure what can be done to make that happen. As Barkley surges to prominence, it almost seems like Hurts is sleepwalking more and more. Poise is one thing, but a lack of urgency is quite another.

We’re a deep playoff team, but if a team can jump on us 14 – 0 like the Buccaneers did, (our loss 16 – 33), we’re in trouble.

Side note: For what it’s worth, I didn’t like the look in A.J. Brown’s eyes, during his post-game interview at his locker. He said all the right things, but… I’ll let you look it up for yourself. You tell me.

FOUR THINGS: WK 13: EAGLES – RAVENS

THAT Rams game was a statement win. Despite missing WR DeVonta Smith (hamstring), the Eagles still scored nearly 40 points, while rushing for over 300 yards, and even got 100 yards and a TD from WR A.J. Brown.

If we get Smith back, we just might end up terrorizing this week’s opponent, as they are the second worst pass defense in the entire league. Their problem isn’t a lack of talent or experience. It’s a fatal flaw built into the very structure of their defensive philosophy, and it has reared it’s head in each of their four losses.

This is a measuring stick game. This game will tell us that we are either ready for a deep playoff run; or it will tell us what needs tightening up, before the playoffs start. Win or lose, we needed a game like this.

A win raises us to 10 – 2, and ensures that we will hold the division lead, at least until our Week 16 re-match with Washington.

A loss would stall us at 9 – 3. We would however, still enjoy a 2 game in-division cushion over Washington.

1) Control the Tackle Box: We have to make sure that two keys happen against the Ravens offensive line. The first key, is not allowing the middle of our Defensive Line to get blown off the Line of Scrimmage. With DT Jalen Carter getting double-teamed a lot, we’re going to need DT Jordan Davis to blow up a couple of inside runs.

The second key, is setting the edge. This will also help contain QB scrambles, and any Jet Sweep action. Setting the edge is where we are going to miss DE Brandon Graham (I.R.), the most. If we do both of those things, we’ll congest the running lanes and make it harder for them on the ground.

2) Unleash Goedert: The Ravens play a 3 – 4 defense, and their primary pass rush comes from their OLB’s. It’s a fatal flaw built into the very structure of the Raven’s philosophy of defense. That plays right into the Kerrigan Plan (if don’t know what that is already, click that link), and TE Dallas Goedert is exactly the man to execute that plan.

For a TE to be disruptive to the Ravens, he doesn’t need a bunch of yards or catches. He just needs to be important enough to the offense, that the Ravens have to pull an ILB to the outside, or keep a S over the TE. Either of these moves will weaken interior of the box. And you know what happens if the box is loose! Ohhh, say can you ‘quon…

Just get Goedert going early. He doesn’t need to finish the day with a ton of stats. We just need to force the Ravens to cover him. Or, if they choose not to, let him keep doing damage. We don’t need specific numbers from him, but you’ll recognize his impact if the interior run game looks good.

3) Keep Our Linebackers Clean: Tackling the Ravens RB will be a chore. Especially if he gets up a head of steam. Fortunately for us, he’s really big, at roughly 250 pounds. So he won’t fit through the smaller holes, and we can trap him in the trash on early downs, to help set up third and longs.

However, for those downs when he does see a decent hole, we need LB Nakobe Dean and LB Zack Baun to meet him in those holes. So blockers have to be kept off of them, so that they can see, and bring both arms cleanly to their tackle attempts. That might mean using more of the 5 – 2 alignment than we have been recently.

4) Take Deep Shots Early: To make Goedert more effective, and thereby open up the run, we need to get the ball downfield. That will clear space for the intermediate stuff. It’s not about making the catch (though it would be nice if we do). It’s about making the attempts. So don’t be bummed if a couple of early bombs don’t connect. Those passes are for stabilizing the Offense.

If the Eagles do these Four Things, then we’ll be virtually impossible to beat. That being said…

This game is a Test. This is to see if we are Conference Championship game material. While a road win over an 8 – 4 team, would strongly suggest that we are ready for a run; a loss (at this point in the season), doesn’t mean that we aren’t. It would just be pointing out the things we need to work on.

Understand, right now, as long as we don’t get blown out, either result is a good result, due to the caliber of our competition. Why pad our late season, with bottom-feeder wins? That’s what the Cowboys do, and what happens to them in the playoffs? Like clockwork, you can almost set your calendars to Dallas losing in the Divisional round. It should damned near be a holiday!

Look, let’s take this test, and dissect it afterwards. Win or lose. The goal is a parade in February, and this Sunday in December, is an important study tool in helping us to accomplish that.

SHEESH! Did we ever! We ran for 314 yards and 3 TD’s. Our Offensive Line cut off backside pursuits, while providing holes big enough for a motorcycle. Saquon had a 70 yard touchdown run, on the first play of the second half; and a 72 yard touchdown run in the 4th quarter. He was hardly touched for either. This is unfair. I love it! (DONE)

2) Send the Dawgs: The Rams tried to scare us early, with their rushing attack. On their first drive, they notched 47 of the 92 rushing yards that they’d get all night. Then we forced a fumble and recovered it, ending that drive. As I said in FT, they can’t make a living on their run game, so they must lean on the pass (17 runs, 38 dropbacks).

So the call in FT, was to beat up on the opposing QB. Well, we sacked him four times, and knocked him down a bunch more. He didn’t turn the ball over, but we did get him to fumble, and kept him rattled to the tune of 0 for 8 on third down. (DONE)

3) Get An Early Touchdown: We got just one drive in the first quarter, and it became a field goal. (NOT DONE)

4) Blitz Over Their Right Tackle: I don’t recall a single edge blitz in this game. When we did blitz, it was through the middle. We didn’t really need to bring extra bodies, since our Front Four were doing such an effective job. (NOT DONE)

This week’s Four Things score was 2 of 4. We need to solve our first quarter scoring issue. We can’t have a serious discussion about a deep playoff run, if we don’t. Playoff caliber teams will make short work of us.

Speaking of playoff caliber teams, our next match-up is a measuring stick against one. Specifically the Baltimore Ravens, who come in with the NFL’s #2 rusher. Take a guess at who’s #1.

Game Hero: RB Saquon Barkley – (Admit it. That segue was Hall Of Fame worthy.) He piled up 255 rushing yards, on 26 carries, vs Hurts 22 pass attempts. He set an Eagles all-time rushing record for a single game, and he even showed off as a receiver (4 – 4 – 47 – 11.7 – 0), bringing his individual yardage total to 302 yards.

Game goat: Injuries – It was bad enough to lose CB Darius Slay (3 tackles) to a concussion; but losing DE Brandon Graham (2 – 1.0 – 0 – 0) to a torn tricep for the remainder of the season, was a stab in the belly. Finding out that the injury could be the epitaph of his career, was just twisting the knife.

On The Whole: Except for a few big plays by the Eagles, this game was largely a fist-fight in a phone-booth. The Rams seemed like they wanted to go toe-to-toe with us on that, but in the end, they simply didn’t have the stamina for it. Once a few of the LB’s were thrown out the club, they seemed to lose the desire to play tough.

Funny thing is, the Eagles were shorthanded with WR DeVonta Smith, out with a hammy. And it didn’t seem to disrupt much. We largely didn’t do anything fancy, and honestly, it felt like we were trying to milk the clock, from the moment we first got the ball.

It was a good, solid, no-nonsense win.
